SmCo Arc Magnets

Samarium Cobalt(SmCo) magnets are rare earth permanent magnet which have excellent resistance to oxidation and corrosion, Due to high Curie temperature and stable temperature stability, SmCo arc magnet are used in high temperature permanent magnet (PM) motors, generators, aerospace, automotive, and military applications.

Grades&Types of Rare Earth Samarium Cobalt Arc Magnets:

There are two main types of arc Samarium Cobalt (SmCo) rare earth magnet alloy.  The older type, typically denoted as (1-5) having one Samarium atom per 5 Cobalt atoms, and the newer Samarium Cobalt magnet alloy, typically denoted as (2-17), having an atomic ratio of two Samarium atoms to 17 Cobalt atoms.

Various grades of Samarium Cobalt(SmCo) arc magnets are available for industrial and commercial applications. The grade range allow for balancing cost, magnetic performance, and operational temperature resistance. The magnetic energy of SmCo arc magnet range from 16 to 32 MGOe.

Typical Applications of Samarium Cobalt (SmCo) Arc Magnets

  • High-temperature Motors and Generators

  • Military applications

  • Automotive (sensors)

  • Aerospace (sensors)

  • Magnetic pump couplings

  • Oil drilling applications

  • Cryogenic applications

Safety Warning For Handling Samarium Cobalt(SmCo) Arc Magnets

Rare earth SmCo arc magnets are very strong and brittle, required to ensure safety and prevent damage, appropriate handling and packing are required.

The brittle nature of the alloy can lead to flying chips if the magnets are allowed to impact each other or a solid surface. Most receiving departments are not familiar with the strength of Samarium Cobalt magnets and this can result in injury or broken parts. All personnel that may come in contact with this alloy should be made aware of the dangers of handling these arc magnets. Larger SmCo arc magnets can become a pinching hazard if caution is not exercised. We remind all customers to handle SmCo arc magnets with care.

Radially In / Radially Out:

Samarium Cobalt Arc Magnets

True Radial Arc Segment Magnets

An arc segment shape smco magnets can be polarized NORTH or SOUTH on the Outside Radius. (The resulting opposite pole will reside on the Inside Radius.)

It is very difficult to achieve a true “radial” orientation during the pressing/alignment stage of manufacturing and therefore, truly radial Samarium Cobalt(SmCo)arc segment magnets are rare and specialized. (An approximation of a true radial Orientated Radial Arc is widely utilized in industry.)

Samarium Cobalt Segment Magnets

Approximated Radial Arc SmCo magnets

The approximated radial arc utilizes linear orientation/magnetization along a straight axis. The radial component diminishes on the leading and trailing edges of the approximated radial arc smco magnets.

CIRCUMFERENTIAL:

Samarium Cobalt Magnet

True Circumferential Arc

Circumferential Orientation and Magnetization is not available for arc magnets comprised of Samarium Cobalt; however, this magnetization geometry can be approximated.
